Beadwork feature - beaded spidersTwo weeks ago I promised to make an article on beaded spiders. I like little critters. If you suffer from arachnophobia, you shouldn't look at the rest of this feature. Oh, and I don't quite understand spiders as Christmas ornaments, so I'd be very grateful if someone could explain that practice to me. Is there some sort of legend behind it, some belief or what?

Beadweaving feature - beaded beadsBeaded beads can be done in any of many bead weaving stitches. The beadwork can be done over an existing bead or the beaded bead can be entirely self supporting, hollow or filled, simple or embellished, cylindrical, spherical, cubical, flat, round... whatever shape and size you want. They can be used to make the whole jewelry piece or just as an accent. Check out what our fellow deviants made and how they used their beaded beads in jewelry.

Beadwork feature - shaped flowersFlowers in this feature, unlike the ones in Flowery beadweavings feature, were not made just by "painting" flower in beaded fabric using different coloured beads and, unlike French beaded flowers, don't need wire in order to get or keep shape. These were made using different sizes of beads, different stitches, different tension, by increasing, decreasing and shaping the beaded fabric. There are many different ways to make a shaped flower - from very
simple (think single daisy in daisy chain) to very complex. I'll provide several tutorials and lots of eye candy.

Beadwork feature - Saint Patrick's DayOn my way to the end of the rainbow in search of leprechauns' pot of gold I've seen some lovely things. I
walked on a thick carpet of shamrocks, but there was no time to pick one to bring it here. Intricate knots and triquetras carved in stone took my breath away. I was offered a claddagh ring as a token of friendship and a four-leaf clover for good luck on my journey. And where did I start? I tried to bead my own shamrock.

Beadweaving feature - Geometry and scienceMath doesn't sound like much fun to me. Neither does physics nor biology. But when you combine beadwork with them, you get a different view of these sciences. I wanted to show you sorta sciency side of beadwork and different geometric shapes and patterns that are rather often seen in it, and we don't usually perceive them as such. But when you think about it, it usually all boils down to basic shapes like squares, circles and triangles. But there's more - you can make pyramids, cubes, spheres, cylinders... You can make replicas of DNA and other molecules using beads and thread. Now that does sound like fun. Make sure to check out Gwen Fisher's blog - she made a tute on beaded DNA helix.

Beadwork feature - Paisley and teardropsThis week I chose to show you two well known shapes transfered to beadwork - paisley and teardrop. They are somewhat similar, yet in beadwork usually achieved in quite different manners. Paisleys are usually embroidered or, if woven, done in brick stitch. Teardrops are rarely done through use of beads alone, and are usually connected with beading around a tear-shaped cabochons. And here we have all of it - 3D teardrops, flat teardrops, cabochons, embroidered paisley, beadwoven paisley... I hope you'll enjoy my selection of deviations for this week.

Bead weaving feature - non-jewellery objects

I have a strong feeling that bead weaving is underappreciated here on DA. Perhaps that's because it hasn't been presented in the right way. Show featured artists some love and support and help the word spread around by faving this article.

Bead weaving is making objects by stitching beads together. Sometimes these objects can be soft, textile like and used for clothes, jewelry and accessories. Sometimes they can be very stiff and sculptural. The choice of beads used ranges from tiny seeds and bugles to large glass, acrylic, paper, gemstone or whatever you like beads using many different stitches. I'd like to cover one stitch per feature.

About.com has good instructions for beginners with step by step explanations of every stitch.

I've mentioned beaded sculptural objects. Sometimes they are real sculptures, sometimes pieces of applied art. Variety of stitches is used to make these pieces, usually square, ladder, brick or peyote stitch. Netting and RAW can be used but usually to bead around existing objects, which I won't cover now. Wire is sometimes used instead of thread.
