Collars are flat necklaces that lie on shoulders and chest. Broad ones are usually inspired by Egyptian wesekh collars, but there are narrower ones too. The beaded ones are commonly made in netting technique, but other stitches can be used. They can start as chokers, at the base of the neck or even lower and can end anywhere, from just under the collarbone to navel or even lower. Egyptians were not the only ones to wear this sort of jewelry. Ecuadorian indigenous people of Saraguro are well known for their broad collars and so are Maasai and other African people.

Gorgeous collection, and an informative article too! Would be cool to add some bead embroidered collars too.

I've done a piece on bead embroidery and I'll certainly include embroidered pieces in some articles in future, but I've already prepared so many gorgeous bead woven collars (and these are bead weaving features) that there was no place for embroidered pieces.

Ah, that makes complete sense! At some point when I have time to do more than skim, I'll have to look through your previous articles. I'm still learning the ropes here @ DA, and had no idea that people even did articles like this till seeing yours. I love it -- such a great way to educate and inspire!

Thank you. I'll be doing features on bibs (including embroidered pieces) and lariats next so make sure to check them out this and next Wednesday. You are more than welcome to suggest what you would like to see in next articles - themes, techniques, deviations, tutorials/instructions/patterns - every suggestion will be taken into consideration.
